How to Photograph a Tugboat
Balanced Incongruity
Merry Christmas!
Gallery Night, Downtown Pensacola, FL
Every third Friday of the month, Pensacola, Florida hosts Gallery Night. Downtown streets are closed to vehicular traffic at 5 p.m. when residents and visitors are invited for free events, such as an art fair, and live music on the streets. Many restaurants offer sidewalk cafe’s in the shade of Live Oak and Sycamore trees.
I went to see the 26th annual Power of Photography show (a spectacular photography exhibit) and was pleasantly surprised to see all the activity going on in town. Vendors along Government Street offer for sale very nice arts & crafts, there is free music everywhere, and many businesses offer special prices on drinks. The official party ends at 9 p.m., but most bars and restaurants stay open much later in the evening.
The photo was taken outside Carmen’s restaurant on South Palafox Street shortly after the festivities began. I rendered it in brown tones because it just felt like an old-time community event.
Surreal Surf
Surf and clouds manipulated a little bit in Photoshop. This was created at Fort Morgan, Alabama a day after Hurricane Barry tore through New Orleans. Weather in southern Alabama wasn’t so horrible: a light breeze and some rain with a little flooding in places. The photo has been dramatized, sensationalized and colorized, but other than that – it’s exactly as I envisioned it.

Blossoming Prickly Pear
Despite its incredibly fierce passive/aggressive defense, the Prickly Pear Cactus sprouts a very delicate flower about this time every spring. These are a few growing around the perimeter of the Snow to Sun RV Resort’s leash-free dog park and birding center. Prickly Pear blossoms begin opening in the Rio Grande Valley late March. By the end of June to the middle of July tunas will be ripe for harvest and turned into a delicious wine.
Wandering in a Fog
stumbling…

Stumbling through various Photoshop layers and process until I create something beyond the standard snapshot. This wildflower – still unidentified – is growing beside the driveway. It’s tiny, but the brilliant color pops it out from its surroundings.
I love creating something that isn’t, but still representative of something that is.

Day Lilly Buds

Each of the images in this series (see previous posts) is a collage of mirrored clouds, blended with plants, selected petals or blossoms intended to illustrate symmetry, repeating shapes and forms – sometimes provocatively suggestive – that show relationships and connectivity in the incredibly dynamic life spirit of the universe.
