This couple found an isolated spot on the windswept beach at South Padre Island, Texas where they could enjoy the soft salt air on a warm winter day under the vivid blue sky.
This began as a photograph of the church at Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Antonio, TX. I converted the photo to a crosshatch sketch, added a mirrored image of cirrus clouds from my library of cloud photos, a blue background and some white highlights to create a church floating in a surreal sky. It is both more and less of the original image, as well as more and less of the image in my mind. I built the final illustration on 5 or 6 layers in Photoshop CS5 in about an hour or so.
An unintentional visual theme developed itself during the day while I explored the dunes at South Padre Island, Texas. Some of the photos look as if they could have been taken from the space station, others produce close-up silhouettes of plants in their shadows. A couple of the photos show the sand being blown across the frame; you can almost feel the sting as the wind whips it into your skin.
